“Eastbank • Westbank” documents our exploration of the old and newly built parts of Peitian Village (Fujian Province). We also recorded the transformation in our understanding of Peitian and our identity throughout the journey. The work began at the 13th Documentary Workshop of the New Asian Filmmakers Collective in March of 2021. The task of completing a documentary in 10 days was challenging for me. I was initially unsure of what to do, so I decided to give my cameras to children and a dog. Meanwhile, I invited a television director to join me for shooting and editing. The first attempt brought us surprise, so we decided to go to Peitian for a second time. We wanted to learn more about the development and history of the village and tried to imagine its future. We interviewed the elderly, women, middle-aged men, and outsiders, such as a TikTok-based start-up. We gained a deeper understanding of the village and also discovered how the villagers were taking action for Peitian's development. In the meantime, we became the village's information center as well as participants in the village's affairs.
