从未离开过深山村落的农民马卫国因为在上海读大学的儿子马建国的死而来到了大都市为儿子处理后事。他试图得到儿子死去的答案以及更多的同情，然而在这个冰冷的城市里，他并没有得到他想要的答案，他一度差点丧失理智做出出格的事情，最后取得了学校的谅解，他带着儿子的骨灰回到了深山里的家，一切看似又回归平静，然后失去儿子的痛苦再也无法得到弥补。
