About Apus 雨燕

Apus雨燕 is an independent literary magazine and creators’ community with a globally based team and roots in the Bay Area. Named after the swift, a migratory bird, It focuses on the diasporic experience, exploring themes of identity, cultural conflict, and memory. Scattered across the world, we are drawn together by a shared love of literature and art. Home lingers in the spaces between words, in the shadows of ink, in the weight of paper. With Apus, we craft a small sanctuary, inscribed with the traces of time and space.

Issue 02|Symbiosis

For the second issue of Apus 雨燕, we take Symbiosis as our theme.

Beginning with the questions “with whom do we exist?” and “how do we survive together?”, this issue reconsiders symbiosis not as an ideal state, but as a condition filled with tension, imbalance, intimacy, and negotiation.

In a time when borders continue to harden and the world drifts toward fragmentation, these works place “coexistence” back into lived reality. Across different geographies, temporalities, and emotional landscapes, the issue traces the fragile connections and subtle fractures that emerge between people, environments, memories, and others.

This issue gathers poetry, fiction, visual art, and bilingual writing from contributors across different backgrounds and languages. It also features conversations with Zheng Enbo and Allison King, offering glimpses into the thoughts and practices of a new generation of creators.

By placing Chinese and English works within the same space, Apus allows different languages and sensibilities to move alongside one another—sometimes in harmony, sometimes in friction.

Rather than offering resolution, Symbiosis remains an open question.

Amid uncertainty and constant transformation, this issue searches for possible forms of connection through ongoing adjustment, attention, and dialogue.

We invite you to pause with us.
To turn the page.
To let these voices ripple through your own river of time.

If they leave behind even the faintest shimmer, then Apus 雨燕 has done what it came to do.
